How the MBA Transformed My Career – Denis Dunat’s Story

“Make the decision and go for it! An MBA is an investment in yourself and your development. The time and effort you put into gaining knowledge and skills will return as long-term value.”

Denis Dunat is a manager with extensive international corporate experience, but his MBA journey left a profound impact on both his professional and personal development. When asked if the MBA influenced his career, he answers without hesitation: “It absolutely did. The decision to enroll in the MBA program was the beginning of a change. That step was harder than completing the program itself.”

A Decision That Sparked Change

Why did he decide to pursue an MBA? Denis explains that he felt the need to break free from daily routines and make a change that would enhance his strategic thinking, strengthen his leadership skills, and sharpen his business acumen.

“I felt like I was doing the same things in the same way, stagnating in my personal growth. Ultimately, I needed to step out of my comfort zone, face new challenges, and continue evolving both personally and professionally. The MBA program broadened my perspectives, provided a strategic overview, and laid the foundation for faster growth, personal transformation, and a clearer vision of leadership.”

Denis recalls the modules that had the greatest impact on him:

“Strategic Management with Christian Linder comes to mind first—it helped me understand the structure and importance of setting goals for necessary changes. Then there was Entrepreneurship, which encouraged critical thinking and agile action beyond my usual boundaries. Managerial Economics and Financial Management were also invaluable for developing business acumen.”

People and Community as the True Value of the Program

“In the end, the most valuable part of the MBA program is always the people—fellow students and the alumni community. Expanding your network, meeting new people, and learning from their experiences is the greatest value the program offers.”

Although the weekend lectures were intense and balancing corporate responsibilities with travel was often exhausting, Denis emphasizes that these interactions enriched his experience:

“The weekends were challenging but always engaging. The combination of work and socializing was key to connecting with people. My fondest memories are of those meetings and teamwork.”

When asked about collaborations with colleagues after the program, Denis admits that, in his case, these were more related to his job than entrepreneurial initiatives. However, he highlights the value of the knowledge and experiences he gained:

“The biggest challenge after the MBA is often how to apply multidisciplinary, strategic knowledge in a real business environment, working with colleagues and teams to turn acquired skills into tangible business results and successes.”

Defining Successful Leadership

Denis has a clear definition of an ideal leader:

“A successful leader is constantly seeking change, is self-aware, leads by example, and trusts their team. They clearly communicate purpose and vision, empower others to take responsibility, help them see their contributions, and encourage decision-making while accepting that mistakes are part of the journey. This combination is rare; we often see decisive managers with clear goals but lacking other qualities and integrity.”

Advice for New Leaders and Future MBA Students

For those stepping into leadership roles for the first time, his advice is straightforward:

“Always listen and truly hear. Communicate clearly and openly. Have the courage to make mistakes and accept them when they happen. Make decisions. Motivate and consistently support your team – empowering team members and developing their potential is a key factor for success. Remember, you are only as strong as your team.”

Finally, Denis offers advice to anyone considering an MBA:

“Make the decision and go for it! An MBA is an investment in yourself and your development. The time and effort you put into gaining knowledge and skills will return as long-term value. It will create opportunities for career changes or help you realize your entrepreneurial ideas. The program undoubtedly enhances your competitiveness and develops your potential. Most importantly, you’ll come out of the MBA program as a better version of yourself.”

For Denis, the MBA was more than an academic program – it was a journey of self-awareness, strategy, and new opportunities that shaped his career and approach to leadership.
