Interview with MBA Alumna
“Don’t wait – enroll in an MBA now. It broadens horizons, opens doors, and builds a network of contacts that is essential for today's career advancement. The networking you build may be the most valuable result of the entire program.”
Verica Jurković’s professional journey began in sales, but she quickly realized her horizons were broader. “I wanted more – a deeper understanding of business and the bigger picture. That’s why I studied IT and programming alongside my work, knowing that technology is the backbone of modern business.” This shift led her into the world of ERP systems, where, as a consultant, she gained first-hand insight into business operations from A to Z. It was at that point she decided to enroll in the MBA program at COTRUGLI Business School. “The MBA literally changed my mindset – before, I saw myself as a consultant, but today I see myself as a leader and founder.”
Leadership Shaped by People and Experiences
When asked who had the greatest influence on her leadership style, Verica doesn’t hesitate: “I would highlight Stjepan Ciglenečki, my first mentor in the ERP world, with whom I still collaborate today. And also my colleague Helena Schmidt, whom I met during the MBA, who was a valuable source of advice and inspiration.”
Today, she leads Datalab Croatia, a branch of a regional company specializing in ERP solutions. “I don’t see myself as a ‘director’ in the traditional sense, but more as a mentor who wants to leave a positive mark on the careers of people around me. My greatest wish is that one day someone will say I helped them grow.”
Why COTRUGLI?
Verica considered pursuing an MBA abroad, but COTRUGLI offered everything she was looking for. “I was drawn by the entrepreneurial and dynamic orientation of the program. It had a great balance of international professors and practical interaction – exactly what I needed.”
Her goal was to broaden her horizons, gain insights into different industries, and learn from inspiring people. “And that’s exactly what happened. The MBA surrounded me with smart, entrepreneurial people, which motivated me to raise my own ambitions.”
The most challenging modules, she says, were sales and innovation. “Before that, I never looked at them strategically, and that’s exactly what the MBA gave me – a new perspective.” Beyond the knowledge, her best memories are tied to people. “Lectures by Professor Ivica Vrančić and friendships with classmates are things I still cherish today. That’s a value that lasts.”
Balancing MBA, Work, and Family
Balancing the MBA with work and family life wasn’t easy. “It was challenging – weekends at lectures, weekdays at work, and a family waiting at home. But it was worth every sacrifice. The knowledge, experiences, and connections I gained are simply priceless.”
The Power of Networking and Mentorship
During the program, she built relationships that remain central to her professional and personal life. “The combination of business and personal friendships is a huge value. We still collaborate, exchange ideas, and support each other.”
Verica also sees herself stepping into a mentorship role within the COTRUGLI alumni community. “For a long time, I thought everyone knew what I knew, but then I realized everyone has their own unique expertise. That’s why I want to share my experiences in digitalization – I believe that’s where I can contribute the most.”
How the MBA Shaped Her Career
The MBA was a turning point in her career. “It helped me realize how important continuous learning is. I shifted perspective – I no longer just look for answers, I focus on asking better questions.”
Her approach to leadership and decision-making also changed. “Before, I thought my way had to be the right way. Today I know that leadership is a process of learning, listening, and adapting.”
Leadership for the Future
Verica believes MBA programs should place even more focus on artificial intelligence, automation, and data analytics. “These are technologies already shaping markets today, and future leaders must be prepared for them.”
For her, a successful leader is not someone who only makes decisions but someone who creates an environment where people want to work. “A leader’s special skill is to bring together different people and align them toward a common goal.”
If she could advise her younger self, it would be: “Listen to people without prejudice. Everyone has their own story, and when you show respect, you create space for trust and collaboration.”
Looking ahead, she sees herself continuing in leadership positions, with a strong focus on creating long-term value. “I want to build solutions with my team that will remain relevant in the market while helping people around me grow.”
A Message to Future MBA Students
